Arena Structures VIP Links

19 October 2009

Arena Structures supplied a range of temporary event structures to the three historic Scottish links courses creating the stunning setting for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship 2009.

Arena’s relationship with the organisers meant they could tailor the range of temporary overlay to very closely match the varied requirements for structures. Project Manager David Moynes simultaneously oversaw all of the temporary media structures, public catering facilities and retail points around each of the courses. The main feature at The Old Course at St Andrews was Arena’s VIP Guest Dunhill Pavilion measuring 55m x 25m. At Kingsbarns a 10m x 15m structure extended the club house facilities for guests, whilst at Carnoustie a 10m x 10m Pavilion hosted the VIP Guests.

On all three courses Arena Scaffolding also supplied the scoreboards and scaffolding sub-structures to create level flooring over the undulating courses, on the Dunhill Pavillion this saw a drop of 4m from one corner to the other.

David commented:
“The dining facilities are an important element to this pro-am tournament, not only providing a stylish environment, but also shelter from the sometimes harsh conditions. This year the high winds inhibited play on the Thursday, which underlines how important it was that the structures installed on the course were installed by experienced people, working to CAD drawings and engineering calculations that ensured appropriate wind-loading tolerances.”

From 7th-9th October, 236 golfers (half pro, half amateur) competed across all three courses, leading into the final day on the Sunday 10th where the contenders played out the final round on the challenging Old Course at St Andrews. This year newcomer Simon Dyson shot to victory with a final round that included six birdies in seven holes.
